Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) bring unprecedented levels of information, automation and potential safety into the cockpit. Since the FAA no longer distinguishes between paper or electronic charts, pilots are beginning to utilize EFBs for Sectionals, WAC, TAC, Low & High Enroute charts, Approach Plates and airport diagrams as well as virtual glass panel instruments, moving map GPS, terrain awareness, traffic alerts, near real-time in-cockpit weather, sophisticated flight planners, flight guides, etc.
The challenge for pilots is to become proficient with and develop a new mindset toward computers in the cockpit in order to derive the full benefits of these emerging technologies without being distracted from the primary task of flying the plane. Each manufacturer's EFB solution has unique strengths and weaknesses making it equally important that pilots fully understand the nuances of their system to always know what the system is doing now and how to make the system do what they need to do next.
